The night shift votes too.
Futures barely sleep. Between yesterday's close and today's open, the overnight session keeps auctioning for hours — thinner, slower, but real. By the morning it has left its own coordinates: the overnight high and low, the edges of everything the night was willing to pay. They are the freshest levels on your map, and often the first ones tested after the bell.
Thin volume, honest edges
Overnight moves happen on a fraction of the day's volume, so the prices in between carry less conviction. But the extremes are different: they are where the night's auction failed to go further — a real rejection, just by fewer participants. That is why the ON high and low behave as genuine references: the day session treats them as the night's verdict, to be confirmed or overruled with full volume.
Overnight inventory: who is already positioned?
If the night rallied and price opens at the top of the overnight range, most overnight participants are long — and sitting on profits they can only realize by selling. That is overnight inventory: when it is stretched to one side, the first minutes of the day often include an inventory correction — a dip that is just the night shift taking chips off the table, not a change of story. Knowing this keeps you from reading the first move of the day as more than it is.
The gap, revisited
Season 2 read the open against yesterday's value. Add the night and the picture completes: an open far from yesterday's close that the overnight ALREADY traveled is not a surprise to the market — the auction absorbed the news hours ago. An open that gaps beyond even the overnight range is genuinely new territory for everyone. Same gap size, very different meaning.
Night mapped. Now the day begins — and its first hour draws the skeleton everything else hangs on.
