The auction can be seen

In chapter 1 you learned that the market is a continuous auction searching for agreement. That auction is not an abstract idea: two classic tools draw it directly on your chart. The TPO profile and the Volume Profile stack the activity at each price — and once you know how to read them, a chart stops being candles and starts being a map.

Two ways to draw the same auction

Both profiles stack activity by price, but they measure different things. The TPO (Time Price Opportunity) measures time: how long price spent at each level, marking each 30-minute period with a letter. The Volume Profile measures volume: how many contracts actually traded at each level. Same auction, two lenses — the TPO shows where time was spent; the VP, where the money went. Time and volume together tell you where the market truly built value.

The value area: the heart of the session

The value area is the zone holding roughly 70% of the session's business. Its three levels are the basic map of any session: the VAH (value area high) at the top, the POC (the price with the most activity — the longest row of the profile) in the middle, and the VAL (value area low) at the bottom. Inside the value area, the auction agrees. Outside it, someone is forcing new prices — and the market has to decide whether to accept them or reject them.

Naked POC: the levels the market remembers

When a session closes, its POC stays behind on the chart. If price has not come back to touch it yet, it is called a naked POC. It marks where the auction found its deepest agreement — and the market tends to re-examine those zones when it trades nearby, because unfinished business attracts attention.

Reading them side by side

Put both profiles of the same session next to each other and the structure jumps out: the longest row is the POC in both, the bell shape shows balance, and any thin zone shows where price moved fast without building business. When time and volume agree on where value is, that level matters more. When they disagree, that tension is information too.
